A human body on an average contains more than 70% water. The water is vital for most of the metabolic activities. The blood, brain and the liver contain great amounts of water. The nervous system works by transmitting electric signals through the nerves. This transmission is done with the help of electrolytes that contain water.
The blood on the other hand contains about 80% of water. When there is dehydration, the body fluids get thicker and more concentrated making it very hard for the transportation of these fluids. The brain also contains water and when there is reduction in the concentration of water in the brain the cells start to die. This can cause fatal diseases. It is also believed that lack of water is a primary reason for various types of nervous disorders like the Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, etc.
Due to the above reasons, water is the best medicine for a healthy lifestyle. The quantity and the quality of the water are important. If the water consumed is contaminated, there are possibilities of falling ill. The water is necessary for the rapid absorption of the nutrients to the blood stream. The carbohydrates and various sugars are water soluble and hence get absorbed easily in the presence of water.
The energy available in the body also is affected by the water. Once the water content of the body reduces the energy also reduces. When the body fluid’s content is reduced by 15%, it may also cause death. This is the reason why sportsmen and other people who tend to sweat a lot are advised to drink huge amount of water or other electrolyte that keep their body hydrated.
The muscles also comprise water and therefore if there is chronic dehydration, the muscles get degenerated leading to various other problems like no muscular power and a weak body. We must also know the signs of dehydration so that measures can be taken immediately. Headaches, joint pains, constipation, bright yellow color of urine with strong odour and thirst are few symptoms of dehydration.
Water is essential for another important metabolic activity- detoxification. This process removes all the harmful chemicals and substances that enter the body. Because of the increased pollution in the surrounding, the amount of harmful things that gains entry to our body has increased. Fortunately we have a way to remove all the toxic by drinking large quantity of water. The water flushes out the unwanted substances. If these toxins are not removed, it may lead to degenerative diseases that cannot be cured.
Drinking large amount of poor quality water is also harmful for the body. The liver and kidney that act as the filter for the water that is taken in, can get damaged by the impurities present in the water.
There are many organization that encourage in drinking pure water for good health. It is because of the above reasons that water seems to be the best medicine for a healthy lifestyle.
